Te Kura provides a boost for Sāmoan language
The third most spoken language in New Zealand is about to get a boost.
Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) is now offering a Sāmoan language course at NCEA Level 1.
Te Kura Chief Executive Mike Hollings says the course will help students develop their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through a range of topics such as family, homelife and celebrations.
Te Kura has made the announcement as Sāmoan Language Week / Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa kicks off next week. The theme this year is: Lalaga le si’osi’omaga mo se lumana’i manuia. Weave an environment for a better future.
Gagana Sāmoa is spoken by nearly half a million people worldwide, including 85,000 people in New Zealand, making it the third most spoken language in New Zealand after English and te reo Māori.
Mike Hollings says language, identity and culture are closely intertwined. “Our language courses offer opportunities for learners to strengthen their identity, communicate with whānau, and generally increase their self-confidence.”
