Key tasks for supervisors
As supervisors, you play an important role in supporting ākonga to develop the skills and knowledge they require to become independent learners. You are expected to provide the following support:
Minimise distractions
Ensure that other people in the learning environment know there is valuable learning going on. Encourage them to keep distractions to a minimum while being mindful of the role whānau can play in sharing and celebrating learning.
Suitable learning space
Your ākonga will need a learning environment that meets their physical needs, such as a clear space to do their mahi, good light and suitable equipment.
Equipment
Your ākonga will need a computer and access to the internet. Refer to our checklist to ensure they have everything they require. A loan laptop and a subsidy towards the internet is available to ākonga who meet our eligibility criteria.
Set up laptop
When you are enrolled go to The Hub icon in My Te Kura to help ākonga set up their laptop.
This site provides you with helpful information about topics such as setting up free Microsoft Office, setting up emails, how to use the drop box and how to receive feedback.
Support learning
Here are some tips on how you can provide support and encouragement to your ākonga:
- plan a daily routine together
- aim for a balance of online and offline learning activities
- set small goals for success and celebrate them on completion
- discuss completed learning each day
- give plenty of immediate feedback and praise
- ask questions to stimulate thinking and inquiry
- take time to read and discuss books
- assist with access to recommended online resources
- recognise any special interests and discuss these with ākonga and kaimanaaki
- talk about the feedback from their kaimanaaki and write any thoughts you both have about that learning: for example, a comment at the end of each week in My Korowai.
We do recognise that all circumstances are individual, and timetables may require adjustments on certain days. However, progress is more likely to happen with very regular learning and supervisor support.
Wellbeing
As well as getting involved in ākonga learning, you need to support their wellbeing. This includes encouraging them to take regular breaks, drink water, and take time away from the computer screen at least every 20 minutes. Other ideas for wellbeing are included in the resources section at the end of this supervisor section.
